On average, the typical American takes 17.4 days of paid time off (PTO) a year. As an employer, having leave management policies in place can help you better plan for when employees use their vacation time. Whether they’re using simple PTO or a more complicated FMLA leave, employees benefit from leave management policies that help them keep track of used days. On your end of things, leave management helps you keep your company productive and legally compliant.

What Is Leave Management?

Leave management encompasses all aspects of employees taking time off. This includes anything from ordinary PTO to FMLA leave to bereavement leave. A solid leave management strategy means you have all of your company’s policies clearly outlined so you and your employees know exactly what to expect. Leave management experts also need to know all federal and state labor laws and their requirements.

Having a well-defined leave policy is one of the most important employee benefits you can offer. It gives employees clarity on how much vacation they can take—and also helps them feel valued.

On the employer side of things, good leave management entails tracking how many days an employee has taken off. This ensures you remain compliant with your policies—and the law. It also helps you manage coverage in each department so productivity levels don’t drop. For example, you can keep track of time off requests so that all members of the same department aren’t out at once.
